Where are the dinosaur tracks located?
The dinosaur tracks are approximately 2.5 miles up the Joe Johnston Route, past Marker #19. It's a five-mile round trip hike, so bring plenty of water and snacks, and start early, especially with children. Trails are rugged and not suitable for most strollers.
Why are trails closed when it rains?
Trails are closed to prevent erosion and damage. Saturated trails become muddy and hikers may go around puddles, widening them. Trail conditions are posted on their Facebook page, Twitter, or by calling the main office after 7:30 a.m. The Discovery Trail is usually open to hikers only when main trails are closed.
Can I bring my dog?
Pets are permitted only on the Discovery Trail and Frontcountry trails (Savannah Loop and Lytle’s Loop). They must be on a leash no longer than 6 feet, and owners must clean up after them. Dogs are not allowed in the Backcountry to protect local wildlife and ecosystems.
Can we camp at Government Canyon?
Yes, walk-in tent camping is available. These sites do not have water or electricity hookups, but potable water is available from spigots near the campground parking lot. Each site includes a pad, lantern hook, fire ring, picnic table, and food hutch.
Is fishing or swimming allowed?
No, fishing and swimming are not permitted. Most of the property is located over the Edwards Aquifer Recharge Zone, and there are no permanent bodies of water in the canyon.
